One day you will wake up and there wont be
any more time to do the things you wanted.
Do it now.
( Paulo Coelho )
Time is life. It is irreversible and irreplaceble.
To waste your time is to waste your life,
but to master your time is to master your life
and make the most of it.
( Alan Lakein )
I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world.
In others’ eyes, my life is an epitome of success.
However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end,
wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.
At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling
my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and
wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and
become meaningless in the face of impending death.
In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the
life supporting machines and hear the humming
mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of the god
of death drawing closer …
Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient
wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue
other matters that are unrelated to wealth …
Should be something that is more important:
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art,
perhaps a dream from younger days.
Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person
into a twisted being, just like me. God gave us the
senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart,
not the illusions brought about by wealth. The wealth
I have won in my life I cannot bring with me.
What I can bring is only the memories precipitated
by love. That’s the true riches which will follow you,
accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on.
Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit.
Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want
to reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.
What is the most expensive bed in the world?
The Sick Bed …
You can employ someone to drive the car for you,
make money for you but you cannot have someone
to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can
be found. But there is one thing that can never be
found when it is lost ── Life. When a person goes
into the operating room, he will realize that there
is one book that he has yet to finish reading──
The Book of Healthy Life. Whichever stage in life
we are at right now, with time, we will face the day
when the curtain comes down. Treasure love for your
family, love for your spouse, love for your friends.
Treat yourself well. Cherish others.
( Steve Jobs’ Last Words )
Death alerts us to think about what really matters.
It urges us to be honest with ourselves.
It urges us to rearrange our priorities in life.
Would we ever regret spending so much of our lives
on the treadmill of a work existence?
我有工作 job or occupation,
我有職業 profession or career,
但我沒有使命 mission, vocation or labour of love。
追求及擁有別人認為是好的東西,但卻不是自己真正喜歡的東西;
勉強自己做不喜歡做的事;
But it’s all an illusion.
We are just like hamsters running on a wheel.
What is living?
What is the difference between living and existing?
Did I really live?
Am I proud of how I lived?
As soon as man does not take his existence
for granted, but beholds it as something
unfathomably mysterious, thought begins.
( Albert Schweitzer )
Here was a man who now for the first time found
himself looking into the eyes of death──who was
passing through one of those rare moments of
experience when we feel the truth of a commonplace,
which is as different from what we call knowing it,
as the vision of waters upon the earth is different
from the delirious vision of the water which cannot
be had to cool the burning tongue. When the
commonplace ‘We must all die’ transforms itself
suddenly into the acute consciousness ‘I must die──
and soon,’ then death grapples us, and his fingers
are cruel; afterwards, he may come to fold us in
his arms as our mother did, and our last moment
of dim earthly discerning may be like the first.
( George Eliot, Middlemarch )

所以常常會誇張地認為死亡可以給我們帶來智慧;
Death destroys a man: the idea of Death saves him.
( E. M. Forster )
When it is time to die,
let us not discover that we have never lived.
( Henry David Thoreau )
